Your proposal is virtually identical with what I proposed at my paper more than a year ago. First of all, it seemed to me that most of the content of our ongoing stories was simply boilerplate from prior stories; the boilerplate was merely space filler and the context contributed by each new story was simply disappearing into the bowels of our newspaper library. Second, readers wanted information at the time they needed it, not necessarily at the time we chose to publish it. Third, the paper's body of work was limited to "news," not necessarily non-news information such as, say, biographies of local business and political leaders.

The proposal was rejected immediately because the paper feared relinquishing control to the public. The public, the paper argued, could not be trusted to be as accurate and thorough as professional journalists. So rather than brainstorming solutions, the paper chose to dismiss the idea without a second thought. In that regard, the paper was not unlike Microsoft looking down its nose at the open-source movement.

I would argue that transparency, knowledge-sharing and mutual trust must become the core principles of modern journalism. I look forward to seeing how you tackle those issues in your own project and whether you can reassure newspapers that they need not fear a loss of the control they have enjoyed for so long.

As a local blogger I can't wait to see the results of your research. The blog format is ok, but I have often felt it was lacking. Only a few people guiding the discussion of a whole community. I'm very interested in what kind of tool you come up with. For some reason a forum just doesn't seem right and I never thought of a Wiki. Interesting stuff. Good luck!
